"Good vocabulary is an understated virtue in pop. Bravo, then for singer-songwriter Emily Kraemer, who knows some big fancy words, and a lot of little crude ones too - never have the words "twat", "bum" and "boobs" been so silkily delivered as on this collection of mild-mannered anti-folk confessionals. Downy soft piano and chiorgirl vocals are enhanced by the nice deployment of strings and horns, handclaps and maracas. There's also a polite, climate-controlled atmosphere containing nothing likely to needlessly awaken any sleeping invalids you my have staying with you. Inspiration-wise, it's all very Isobel Campbell, which is fine, but for more carnivorous palates there's also the occasional tabasco dash of New York kook Regina Spektor, nowhere more so than in the jocular "Dog". We await the breakthrough album with interest."

"A Place"

"Multi-instrumentalist Emily Kraemer recorded this straight-ahead love song in January with Gilead Limor, producer, on bass guitar and synths. Right away I'm on side; it's a girl, and the band sounds like they played in the same room at the same time. Emily's range is around the same as Basia's (also given to playing real tunes and sometimes mixing beautiful chord changes with quite simple but occasional feisty lyrics, so we can say there's a comparison). She's been doing small gigs for a while, admitting to as far back as The Kashmir Klub, 2003, and another London venue, the famous Hope & Anchor, 2006/7. "A Place" begins with a simple piano backing and a subtle harmonic overtone. There's a dynamic build-up as the rest of the instruments come in. Like the sea rising up to cover the rocks, then she's away again. A classic pop song full of understated passion, dead simple with just that clever bit of rhythm in the middle to give it bite. Check it out!"
